I. Introduction:
The department of Plant Pathology has came into existence along with
establishment of the College of Agriculture, Latur during 1987. The
department has implementing since 1987 till date, the instructional
programme in under graduation. The Post - graduation instructional programme
has been started implementing since academic year 2002 with an intake
capacity of six students/ year. Up to the academic year 2006-07 of the
24 P.G. students admitted, 17 students have successfully completed their
Post- graduation
Research topics/ projects of the P.G. students have been formulated
and completed and / or ongoing on the frequently encountered major diseases
(Fungal, Bacterial & Viral) of the commercially grown agronomical
and horticultural crops in the region. Academic staff of the department
through research activities has been putting their sincere efforts to
meet emerging challenges in the field of Plant Pathology and trying
to keep pace with time.
The department has made significant contributions in the fields viz.,
etiology, epidemiology, survey and surveillance, severity and yield
losses and management options of sunflower downy mildew, rust, Alternaria
blight and necrosis; soybean rust and anthracnose; bacterial blight
(oily spot )and wilt of pomegranate; mung bean/ urd bean powdery mildew,
Cercospora leaf spot, Macrophomina blight; Groundnut rust, leaf spot,
Sclerotium stem rot, and important disease of vegetables.
The expertise available at the department has been rendering prompt
service of plant disease diagnosis and management to the farmers.
II. Objectives:
1. To execute efficiently the teaching / instructional programme of
under and post graduation.
2. To implement and monitor need base research programme of P.G. students
and in addition the programme finalized and allotted by the AGRESCO
sub committee of the university.
3. To extend the knowledge of crop/ plant diseases and their management
strategies through various extension activities.
